From a village hobby to a recognised trade, Peni Waqalevu celebrated a major milestone in his carpentry career in Labasa on Thursday.

Originally from Vaturova in Cakaudrove, the 21-year-old graduated with a National Certificate in Carpentry (Level 3) from Pacific Polytech during a ceremony held at Kshatriya Hall.

For Mr Waqalevu, the achievement was the fulfillment of a long-held ambition.

He said that his decision to pursue carpentry was driven by genuine passion rather than convenience, as working with timber has always provided him with a sense of satisfaction.

Growing up in his village, Mr Waqalevu was frequently involved in small building projects and repairs.

These experiences that helped him develop practical skills and confidence from a young age.

He said enrolling at Pacific Polytech allowed him to refine those innate abilities while mastering formal industry standards.

The young graduate acknowledged the unwavering support of his family and trainers, noting that their encouragement kept him focused through the rigors of his training.

“I wanted a skill that would help me support my family and serve my community,” he said.

Believing that skilled trades offer sustainable opportunities for youth, particularly those in rural areas, Mr Waqalevu encouraged others to consider technical education as a viable pathway to success.

“Hard work and passion can take you far; this certificate is only the beginning for me,” he added.
