Only woman in her class, young mother graduates in automotive engineering

Adi Laite Tuvuki, 20, has proven that determination and perseverance can overcome obstacles.

She graduated with a Certificate in Automotive Mechanical Engineering from Pacific Polytech’s Tavua Campus last Friday.

The young mother of one was the only female student in her Automotive Mechanical Engineering programme.

Despite balancing motherhood, long daily commutes and studying in a male-dominated field, Adi Laite successfully completed the programme and graduated alongside her male classmates.

She said the journey was not easy, particularly having to leave her young child at home while attending classes.

“My hope is to continue my studies and build a successful career in the automotive mechanical engineering field,” said Adi Laite, who hails from Burenitu, Nalawa, in Ra, with maternal links to Nasarowaqa, Lekutu, in Bua Province.

After completing Form Seven, she remained at home until a friend told her about an interview opportunity at Pacific Polytech.

“I attended the interview without expecting much. When I was accepted into the engineering programme, I was surprised and excited,” she said.

She was the only female in the class, but her instructor encouraged her to remain focused and complete the programme.

Throughout her studies, Adi Laite travelled daily from Nalawa to Tavua, often returning home late at night after classes.

Balancing her responsibilities as a student and a mother was one of the greatest challenges she faced.

“My husband, who is a farmer, and my mother looked after my baby while I attended classes. Without their support, I would not have been able to complete this programme,” she said.

She expressed heartfelt gratitude to her husband and mother for their encouragement and sacrifices throughout her studies.
