Semisi Tiritirisamu, 21, had to overcome many hurdles to make his family proud.

Born and raised in Raiwaqa, Suva, Mr Tiritirisamu is from Narocake Village, in Noco, Rewa, with maternal links to Nadi.

He graduated with a Diploma in Nautical Science Level Five on Thursday.

The journey wasn’t smooth sailing.

However, with a strong will to succeed and like many young people, he pursued his dreams, especially one of becoming a pilot.

But when COVID-19 hit in 2019, it derailed his plans. Instead of flying through the skies, he set his sights on the open seas.

“The pandemic changed everything,” he said.

“But it helped me find a new path and now I want to grow in the shipping industry.”

His studies and hard work the past two and a half years has paid off when he was one of the few students to be awarded the National Toppers Scholarship.

“I’m really thankful to Government for the support,” Mr Tiritirisamu said.

“Scholarships give people like me a chance.”

In attributing his success to God and his parents he said “their support kept me going”.

Now, with a diploma in hand his next goal is to gain as much experience as possible out on the field of work.

His story is one of determination and adaptability ending with gratitude.
