Mereani Saumi stood tall and smiling yesterday as she crossed the stage to receive her Bachelor of Medical Imaging Sciences from the Fiji National University’s College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.

The Savudrodro, Savusavu, Cakaudrove lass with maternal links to Nasesara, Moturiki in Lomaiviti, described her three-year journey as one shaped by discipline, sacrifice and the unwavering support of her family.

One of her biggest challenges, she said, was peer pressure. She learned early that university life required “abstinence and balance” to stay focused.

“There were many challenges, but keeping myself grounded helped me reach this day,” she said.

Surrounded by family and friends also including her close friends Amelia and Letila, Ms Saumi dedicated her achievement to her parents, grandparents and everyone who supported her.

“My grandparents couldn’t make it, but I carry them with me in spirit,” she said.

She now hopes to join the workforce as a Medical Imaging Technologist, a profession many still refer to as “x-ray technician”, though it covers a broad range of imaging technologies.

Ms Saumi said her passion comes from being able to “see inside the human body” without invasive procedures.

“It’s fascinating using different modalities to see what the naked eye cannot,” she said.

She also offered advice to students struggling in their studies.

“Life is hard. It was hard for me too. But if I can do it, and if everyone graduating today can do it, so can you,” Ms Saumi said.

Her story is one of quiet determination, a reminder that with focus, family support and resilience, even the toughest journeys can lead to remarkable achievements.
