This is for Mum, Says Fiji Sun Digital Journalist

A four-hour road trip from Lautoka did not deter Rohini Naidu from attending her daughter’s award ceremony.

That same commitment saw Jennis Naidu, a Fiji Sun Digital journalist, walk away on Friday night with one of two The Fiji Times Awards for Best News Reporting at the University of the South Pacific Journalism Programme.

Jennis said, “My mother travelled all the way from Lautoka, just to be a part of this awards night for two hours. I had told her to not worry and tire herself, as she had so many things needed to be done back in the West, but she was like, ‘No, I want to be there for your special night and there is no stopping me. That she did.’

“Without her faith in me, I would not have come this far. She has been a constant support system in my life, supporting me throughout, no matter what.”

She dedicates the award to her mother.

“To be awarded The Fiji Times Best News Reporter for the year 2019 with my colleague, Harrison, is truly unbelievable,” she said.

“My advice to students is to not be afraid of failing. Failure does not mean, this is it. Keep trying. Also, opportunities can come knocking when you least expect it. This award was unexpected, as well as being a permanent staff member with the Digital team at Fiji Sun.”

Ms Naidu initially did her attachment for six weeks with the Fiji Sun as part of her journalism programme and was later offered a permanent position with the company.

Meanwhile, it was an early birthday gift surprise for Rosalie Nongebatu, who received the Fiji Sun Tanoa Award for the Most Outstanding Graduating Student.
