Toppers Recipient Eases Burden Of Parents

"My dad is a farmer and I know-how hard he works, and I worked hard to get the scholarship because I did not want to burden him more. I was the Hostel head girl of the school and I had to balance my leadership role and my studies. At times it was hard, but I keep telling myself that I can do it and not to give up."

Every child wants to give their parents a good life and Alisi Vua is no different.

Miss Vua knows the hardship her parents are going through and she vowed to work hard and get a National Toppers Scholarship.

The 18-year-old achieved her goal after scoring 362 out of 400 in her Year 13 National Examination last year.

The former Labasa College student is pursuing her bachelor’s in commerce at the University of the South Pacific, Laucala Campus in Suva.

“My dad is a farmer and I know-how hard he works, and I worked hard to get the scholarship because I did not want to burden him more,” Miss Vua said.

“I was the Hostel head girl of the school and I had to balance my leadership role and my studies.

“At times it was hard, but I keep telling myself that I can do it and not to give up.

“My dad is a farmer and I know the difficulties he goes through, so I am going to study hard and give back to my parents.”

Miss Vua said her parents were happy when she informed them that she was a toppers recipient.

“My course is for three years, it will not be an easy one. I know that there will be challenges I am bound to face but I know that I am here for a purpose and I will fulfil them,” she said.

“I want to set a benchmark for my younger siblings, and I know I can do it.

“One thing I have learned in life is to always be humble and never think that you are better than anyone else.

“I have set what are my priorities in life and I will work towards that.”

Her advice to youngsters is to: “Always think of your parents before you do anything and always make them proud.”
