Triple Blow For Mataitini

Like many families around the country, 58-year-old labourer, Neori Mataitini and his household of Wainividio Settlement of Navua, are not spared of hardships brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Mataitini, who was barely recovering from the loss he incurred because of Tropical Cyclone Yasa has suffered another blow when he lost his job following the recent lockdown.

Mr Mataitini said, he used the last of what little was left to prepare lunch for him and his wife.

“I went around in the morning to look for casual labour job, but to my bad luck, I returned home empty handed, I hope my wife will be lucky to catch some fish for dinner, otherwise we have to sleep on empty stomach again,” Mr Mataitini said.

“I used what little saving I had to rebuild a makeshift shelter after my house was completely flattened to ground by TC Yasa, then losing my job to this pandemic has shown me the worse side of life.”

Mr Mataitini is hoping this pandemic will be over soon so he can secure a job to provide for his family.

He added: “I cannot expect my neighbors to help us because they are also facing the same challenge so my hope is that tomorrow will be better than today,”

Many residents of Wainividio Settlement in Navua are facing a similar situation and they hope to receive some help from Government.
