At 74 years old, Kelera Qalovawasawasa is proving that age is no barrier to learning.

The grandmother and respected leader of the Nasawana Women’s Club celebrated a milestone today.

She graduated from Fiji National University (FNU) with a Certificate in Sewing through the Rural Remote Maritime Training programme at Nabalebale Village in Savusavu.

Ms Qalovawasawasa, who left school after Year 8, said education has always been a personal goal, one she pursued with determination despite life’s challenges.

“Since the beginning, I wanted to pursue learning and keep myself busy by learning new things,” she said.

The widow, who has been living alone since the passing of her late husband, Iskeli Ligairi, a schoolteacher, said her community role motivated her to continue learning.

“I am still a leader in my Nasawana Women’s Club and I continue to hold on to hope and achieve my goals,” she said.

Ms Qalovawasawasa encouraged other women, especially in rural areas, to embrace education at any stage of life.

“My age has shown me that it is not a barrier, and I would like to encourage others the same,” she said.

Graduating today was a proud moment, she added, allowing her to honour the memory of her late husband.

“Being alone is not your weakness. This is the time to know your strength,” Ms Qalovawasawasa said.

Her journey highlights the power of lifelong learning and the impact of local women leaders in inspiring others.

She reminded fellow villagers that pursuing goals, no matter the obstacles, can transform both individual lives and the wider community.
