$30M Plaza to boost economic activity

The new $30 million plaza in Nausori Town is expected to boost economic activity for the four wards that make up the Nausori region.

Nausori Town is the main shopping centre for the people living in Nausori, Davuilevu, Naulu/Nakasi, and Wainibuku/Davuilevu Housing.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, opened the plaza on Saturday.

He emphasized the economic benefits of the investment in creating employment opportunities for locals living within the Nausori region.

Mr Prasad said the complex had a trickle on effect that will support jobs in retail, hospitality, and other sectors.

“The plaza provides a platform for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to grow and succeed, contributing to the revitalisation of local businesses and industries,” Mr Prasad said.

“Local employees will gain valuable skills and expertise, enhancing the capacity of our workforce.”

Mr Prasad said the Coalition Government was committed to fostering investment, job creation, and sustainable economic growth.

“We recognise the importance of maintaining political stability, investing in critical infrastructure, and ensuring a business-friendly environment that supports both local and foreign investors. Projects like the Nausori Plaza are vital to achieving these goals.

“This development aligns perfectly with our national agenda of inclusive growth, which seeks to empower communities, improve livelihoods, and create a more resilient economy for all Fijians.”

The opening of the plaza coincided with the celebration of the Chinese New Year.

Mr Prasad recognised the significant contributions made by the Chinese community in Fiji.

“Though small in number, the Chinese community has had an immeasurable impact on our nation’s history and development,” he said.

“From the early settlers in the 19th century, Chinese migrants brought with them entrepreneurial spirit, a strong work ethic, and a desire to contribute to  Fiji’s growth.”

Mr Prasad highlighted their contribution to the development of new industries, enterprises, and agriculture, highlighting their lasting influence on the social structure of Fiji.

Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Fiji, Zou Jian reflected on the strong ties between the two nations.

“China will work together with Fijian friends to recall the aspirations of establishing diplomatic ties, deepen mutual respect and beneficial cooperation, promote people-to-people exchanges, and move forward towards a community with a shared future for China and Fiji,” Ambassador Zou said.
