Company managing director Deborah Hinton in an interview said the four classrooms within the new complex would cater for up to 100 students at any one time. She also highlighted this extensive investment was needed as the demand for pilot training increased with interests from the region.
“During the COVID-19 restrictions for higher education’s institutions, we had taken advantage of ample classroom space to ensure physical distancing included in our preventative measures
“Hopefully we’ll be able to officially open the new complex before Christmas.
“We’ll also have our graduation day, maybe a week or so, before Christmas. The wing’s day is quite significant for the students who have finished their courses.”
Mrs Hinton noted that students would graduate at different levels.
“Some will graduate with commercial pilot licences, and others have gone further above, so they’ll be graduating at different levels.”
In terms of pilot training in the future, she says there would always be a demand.
“Before the current COVID-19 problem, there was a worldwide shortage of pilots and that will soon come back again. So there will always be a need for flight training and Fiji is the ideal location particularly Nadi, where the weather’s good most of the year. We do not lose too many flying days here except if there is bad weather here.
“Fiji is the central hub for aviation training throughout the Pacific. The airport facilities are particularly good and CAAF is based right next to the airport and the schools.
“There’s nowhere else that could compare to it.”
2021 intake
The next intake for Advance Aviation Training is in January 2021. There are a lot of career opportunities in aviation, she added. Considering COVID-19, Mrs Hinton says, as an educator, they weren’t affected like the other aviation companies because they don’t rely on tourism.
