Mining executive, Ian He, quietly giggles about the sudden appreciation he has taken to kava, a non-alcoholic and traditional local beverage that he learnt of for its sedate effect.

In fact, its consumption, in moderation, is one that Mr Ian, non-executive chairman of , relishes as a pastime.

The joys of celebrating Diwali, with its variety of spicy cuisine and home-made confectionery, were among other exciting experiences he enjoyed.

Mr Ian travelled to Fiji on six occasions, between 2012 and 2013, but did not get the opportunity to make contact with locals.

On a much longer stay this time, he has taken a deeper appreciation of what Fiji has to offer.

“I enjoy tradition and the food that comes with it,” he said. Another highlight of his latest stay in Fiji was joining the celebration of a traditional wedding.

On another occasion, he was invited to a staff member’s residence, where he had the pleasure of tucking into a meal prepared in an earth oven (lovo).

“Opportunities like that many do not have,” Mr Ian said.

“I boast to my friends abroad that if they see Denarau, they have not seen Fiji in its entirety.”

Mr Ian resides in Vancouver, Canada.

“Even when I retire, I still want to come here every year,” he said.

“I encourage friends of mine in Vancouver to visit Fiji.

“If tourists can stay with locals, all the better.”

Where in Fiji would you take friends to?

Nadi.

It is the tourism hub of Fiji.

Suva on the other hand is a must-see, as the capital city.

And then there is Vatukoula, which I recommend, because I live there.

What is your favorite spot for a coffee or pie?

The Coffee Hub, Ba.

I did not know it existed until last month when someone told me about it, and later took me there.

It has a good setting; and now I am taking my friends there.

The Cofee Hub.

What is your favorite backyard spot?

I enjoy the outdoors.
