The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has launched investigations into 41 traders for allegedly charging excessive prices during the festive season.

Nationwide operations uncovered several breaches, including traders refusing to sell goods at authorised prices and failing to clearly display prices.

Between early December 2025 and the end of the Christmas trading period, FCCC enforcement teams conducted 804 inspections across the Central, Western and Northern divisions.

The inspections covered shops, rental premises, ports, wharves, maritime operations and freight services. In addition, 137 night-time inspections were carried out to target high-risk periods and locations with a history of non-compliance.

FCCC chief executive officer Senikavika Jiuta said the inspections were intelligence-led and focused on times when traders might attempt to take advantage of high consumer demand.

“Festive demand is not a licence to overcharge or ignore the law,” Ms Jiuta said.

“Our work continues even after business hours, and we will take strong action against offenders.”

Night-shift inspections alone detected four breaches and four health-related issues, which have been referred to municipal councils for follow-up action.

Ms Jiuta also confirmed that FCCC’s stationery price surveys for the upcoming school year are nearly complete, with results to be shared on social media to help parents manage back-to-school costs.

“Consumers have rights, and traders have obligations,” she said. “We want to make sure families are not overcharged and that businesses follow the law.”

The enforcement actions highlight FCCC’s ongoing commitment to fair trading practices and consumer protection during peak spending periods.
