Sixty-one per cent of emission is associated with sugarcane cultivation and transport to mills, Mr Karan said. “The use of too much fertilizer, residue management, pesticides, and use of diesel as fossil fuel in transportation of cane to mills, are major sources of carbon emissions,” he said.

Green manuring may be the way forward for sugar cane farmers, amid revelations that the use of fertilisers was a red flag to sustainable efforts.
Sugar cane farmers may also have to do away with the use of fertiliser to reduce the carbon footprint, and enhance climate resilience, the Sugar Cane Growers Fund says.
The suggestion was among concerns put forward during a Westbased workshop on Fairtrade.
