Fiji Airports is exploring its options in the electric vehicle area.
Last week, the organisation sent a representative to Australia to explore sustainable and eco-friendly vehicles, as it strengthened its commitment toward a green transition.
Chief executive officer Mesake Nawari said the move aligned with the global aviation industry’s goals to reduce carbon emissions and attain low-carbon status, as it transitions to a fully functioning net-zero airport by 2050. Fiji Airports earlier announced its plan to construct a solar farm in Nadi to feed Nadi International Airport grid.
“Our electrical and mechanical team has replaced 150 streetlights from the traditional electric streetlights, to 300 watts solar-powered streetlights at our residential compound in Nadi,” he said.
“This project will be extended to all our 15 airports.”
Fiji Airports aims to upgrade its halogen airfield lights to LEDs.
“We are not limiting ourselves to solar-powered lights,” Mr Nawari said.
Nadi International Airport is ahead of the green airport curve, enabled after it earned Level 3 Optimisation accreditation which acknowledges its sustainable approach.
The effort puts Fiji Airports in the same league as:
- Abu Dhabi International Airport,
- Dubai International Airport,
- Hamad International Airport,
- Adelaide Airport,
- Hong Kong International Airport,
- Incheon Airport, and
- Narita International Airport in the Asia/Pacific region.
