Fiji Airways FJ870 flight cancellation, planned

“Our flight crew promptly declared a medical emergency, and we were given priority for landing by the SFO authorities,” the statement said.

The recent cancellation of the Fiji Airways scheduled flight from Nadi to the United States of America was a planned one.

The airline confirmed that these cancellations were planned before the tragic event in early April and were unrelated to the incident that occurred over the weekend.

A 41-year-old male passenger, a U.S. citizen, encountered a medical condition on Sunday, FJ870’s flight to San Francisco, and passed away.

A statement from Fiji Airways said the passenger’s medical condition happened an one hour and 30 minutes before the aircraft arrived at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

The airline said despite the best efforts of its cabin crew and a doctor on board who provided immediate assistance, the passenger died.

“Our flight crew promptly declared a medical emergency, and we were given priority for landing by the SFO authorities,” the statement said.

Fiji Airways ground operations and the relevant authorities were informed in advance and were prepared to meet the aircraft upon arrival as the aircraft landed safely.

The national airline commended its cabin crew and the assisting doctor for their swift and professional response to the emergency.

“Fiji Airways remains committed to the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew, and we are cooperating fully with the authorities as they manage this situation,” the Fiji Airways statement said.

Though last night’s flight was cancelled, the Fiji Airways tracker indicated that tonight’s flight would depart as scheduled.
