Fiji Institute of Accountants Forms New Body

The newly formed Women’s Initiative Committee of the Fiji Institute of Accountants’ will focus on advancing women to leadership positions while having a successful and desirable life bal­ance.

Speaking during the FIA’s Techni­cal Workshop at the Warwick Fiji Re­sort and Spa yesterday, FIA president Zarin Khan said they had an impor­tant mission to promote an environ­ment conducive to equal opportunity and engagement of both males and females.

“The FIA Women in Leadership series will hold quarterly events to focus on identifying issues facing women’s advancement in Account­ing, Finance and leadership roles.”

FIA’s Professional Development Committee acknowledged

Mr Khan acknowledged the work of FIA’s Professional Development Committee which had provided an unprecedented 109 continuing pro­fessional education hours in 2018.

Some of which were in partnership with the University of the South Pacific TAFE, Fiji Revenue and Cus­toms Service, and with the Congress Organising Committee.

“This compared with the 34.5 hours offered in 2017.

“The increased hours clearly indi­cate the commitment by the Institute to provide more opportunities for members and interested third par­ties to meet the International Fed­eration of Accountants mandated Continuing Professional Education hours.

“We are also pleased to advise this is a sell-out event with 135 rooms and 182 registered participants and more enquiries received during the week. In the past two years we have sold 115 rooms at each respective Workshop with an average of 160 participants.

“These statistics indicate that there is healthy interest and need for these events and we hope that you will all continue to support our professional development events.

A delegation had also come from the Nauru Utilities Corporation.

Mr Khan said the continuous edu­cation and providing avenues for the continuous professional education and networking opportunities were part of the new direction for FIA.

Mr Khan said the plenary sessions were designed to stretch the techni­cal workshop participants’ minds to get an insight to areas outside of core accounting.

The five presenters were Nacan­ieli Rika from the University of the South Pacific, Peni Tora from Ernst & Young, Joel Abraham CEO from the Fijian Competition and Con­sumer Commission, Parvez Akbar from the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji and Alivereti Wa­kanivesi from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption.
