He said the ministry’s intention was not only to draw more tourists to Vanua Levu, but more importantly to uplift the lives of the people.
“The office will be key in ensuring the NaVualiku programme’s benefits reach every community on this island,” he added.
Multi-phase project
World Bank Group country manager for Fiji, Stefano Mocci said the US$200 million financing envelope for the project was proudly funded by the World Bank.
This will be implemented in three phases over the next decade in a multi-phase programmatic approach.
He said the World Bank, alongside key partners and stakeholders were committed to supporting the Government of Fiji’s efforts towards transforming Vanua Levu into a thriving tourism hub – one that creates jobs, especially for women and youth; attracts both local and international investments; and boosts economic growth – all this and more to improve the quality of life of Fijians in Vanua Levu.
“In addition to financing, we’re also bringing our global and regional expertise, experience and knowledge to the table as part of our commitment to support implementation of this project,” Mr Mocci said.
“This new office, therefore, is an essential component of the work that lies ahead, to help accelerate results on the ground, and improve coordination and collaboration while fostering stronger partnerships in the North.”
He said they were proud to be supporting Fiji’s development priorities under its ‘Look North’ policy to bolster the tourism sector in Vanua Levu.
