While the Coronavirus pandemic disrupted the passage of the multitude it was a blessing to a few including Nitika Devi of Waiqele, Labasa.

In 2019, she opened her business, Nitika’s Unique Apparel on Facebook where customers could do online clothing shopping which she would later hand deliver to them.

No journey is easy, the 33-year-old mother of two described the start wasn’t easy due to COVID-19 movement restriction on social gatherings.

She then focused on completing her Diploma in Early Childhood Education at the University of the South Pacific in 2020.

Despite not been offered a job by the Ministry of Education to work as a preschool teacher, Ms Devi decided to continue with her online business.

“After my husband got a job in Savusavu, my son and I also had to move; that’s when my business thrived,” Ms Devi said.

“While I was schooling, I used to help my father, Jamuna Prasad, a vendor sell his farm produce at Labasa Market.”

The third eldest of five siblings now residing at Low Cost, Labasa said that’s when she acquired the knowledge and skills on how to do business which has helped her become successful.

Last weekend she opened her shop on the first storey of the building housing the RB Patel Supermarket in Labasa with an investment of $25,000.

“I encourage young mothers that they can use the knowledge from school to start their own business and earn as days go by,” she said.

“After six years of struggling, today I have my own shop with the support from my husband, parents, in-laws and friends.”

She thanked her customers for supporting her small business.
