Fiji Sugar Corporation’s (FSC) Labasa Mill will next month for the 2024 crushing season.

Minister for Sugar Industry Charan Jeath Singh said the likely date was around mid-June.

Climate change effect

Mr Singh said out of the three mills, Labasa was the best performing mill according to seven engineers from India who inspected the mills.

He said Labasa Mill could crush 1.5 million tonnes of cane but worked on around 600,000 tones.

“We aim to do much better than last year,” Mr Singh said.

“I know climate change is an issue and the weather pattern has changed, so we also have to change our ways of doing things, according to the weather.

“We need to be updated with weather forecast, and understand what kind of weather pattern is expected, and learn to adjust to overcome challenges in life.”

Sugar Cane Growers Council chief executive officer Vimal Dutt said some farmers were waiting for the fourth cane payment.

“This will greatly assist the farmers and we are hopeful for a better season,” he said.
