Fiji’s proximity to Australia and heavy promotion is attracting a considerable share of ‘new’ Australian tourists.

If realised, Fiji’s tourism revenue will approach a new high of FJ$2.5bn this year (+21.1 per cent on 2019 earnings).

With strong forward bookings, still solid economic conditions in key markets and busy seasons ahead, ANZ believes estimate of 970,000 short-term arrivals for 2023 (+8.5 per cent y/y) is achievable.

While the share of Australians in total arrivals stepped down to 50.1 per cent in 2023 from 79.9 per cent last year, it remains well above the 38.5 per cent share in 2019.

Fiji received a total of 47,234 visitors in February, 328.9 per cent more than the same period last year, but a touch lower (-3.1 per cent) than the all-time highest February arrivals registered in 2019.

For the first two months of this year, Fiji received a total of 115,650 short-term arrivals which is up 320.3 per cent y/y and +2.7 per cent over 2019.

Australia remains the main origin for short-term arrivals. Inbound demand from Australia during January and February reached 57,934, 33.6 per cent higher than the previous peak of 43,349 recorded in 2019.
