Lawhill Fiji early this month had donated a set of inflated life raft to the Fiji Maritime Academy (FMA) at their Wailada, Lami office nth.
Principal lecturer, nautical science Captain Tevita Robanakadavu while receiving the donation said the new inflated life raft donated by Lawhill Fiji would be an added boost for Safety and Survival Training at the Fiji Maritime Academy.
“We have introduced an additional programme this year known as the Fishing Deckhands and Skippers programme and this timely donation will enhance teaching and learning delivery for FMA,” Captain Robanakadavu said.
“We conduct four Safety and Survival training from Basic Sea Safety to Advanced Safety each month and for this year with the additional Fishing Deckhands and Skippers programme we would be inflating five life rafts each month,” he said.
Captain Robanakadavu said safety was paramount in training while developing quality seafarers including fisherman.
“Safety is paramount in our bid to train and upskill seafarers before they take on the job at hand,” he said.
“Lawhill Fiji recognises the huge importance of safety; the academy hopes that this contribution will help in the developing of seafarers including fishermen.
“Under the STCW 1978 as amended requirements, all seafarers to undertake the Safety Certificate courses include Personal Survival Technique prior to joining a vessel.
“We would like to thank Edward Roxburgh of Lawhill Fiji once again for his generosity and confidence in our work.”
The Fiji Maritime Academy aims to be the premier Maritime Training Institution in the Pacific region with the mission to produce qualified, competent and disciplined graduates.
The graduates are to serve the maritime and shipping industry, training and up-skilling needs of the shipping industry in Fiji and the Pacific and promote seafaring as the number one career choice for young people.
