Mounting evi­dence sug­gests surfing could be the next best tourism attraction.

Figures from the World Surf League (WSL) show 366 million peo­ple are interested in surfing world­wide, with 128 million considered fans of the sport.

In data sourced by Tourism Fiji, it was found that surfers would travel for wave quality, trip cost, and des­tination culture – all favourable for Fiji.

Tourism Fiji chief executive officer Brent Hill said while an estimated 5 per cent of tourists to Fiji were dedi­cated surfers, that figure was rising.

“What is also great is that 92 per cent of surfers are willing to pay more for sustainable tourism and to give back to the community,” Mr. Hill said.
