An online portal will be made available by the Department of Environment to enhance a Recycling on the Go (ROG) programme that has been piloted at Jai Nayaran College.

Minister for Environment, Mahendra Reddy made this announcement when launching the program at the school yesterday.

Mr Reddy said the initiative is to assist the 24 ambassadors in the pilot programme in carrying out their work by entering the data in the portal that will be assessed by the ministry and partnering stakeholders.

While thanking the students for volunteering and investing their time, Mr Reddy said they will reward the ambassadors with educational gadgets and include their participation included in their curriculum vitae that will make a difference when applying for a job in future.

Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited Chief Executive Officer, Amitesh Deo said they started the programme on the global recycling day last year.

“The idea is this ROG Ambassadors after being trained will go into the community and start activism work for recycling,” Mr Deo said.

“After the training today, they will take on the lead role to promote recycling within the community and within the school system."

“It’s a pilot project, so after one year, we will gauge the success and then do lessons to find out if there is anything we need to fine tune and do better before implementing it other schools progressively."

“We want to ensure that it is sustainable and ensure that all the lessons learned."

Mr Deo expressed his concerns on the absence of civic pride when it comes to recycling.

“The ambassadors will go back and talk to communities about their Individual civic pride and how it becomes individual responsibility to take ownership of recycling programs."

Meanwhile, first time ambassador, Year 13 student, Jone Daunakamakama said he is excited to be part of the piloting programme and hope that he will make an impact to his school.

“This is the first time for me to volunteer for a piloting programme and I hope everyone will take pride in our country by keeping it clean,”Jone said.
