For Mesake Navakabisa, a villager from Namara in Saivou, today was more than just a shopping trip. It was a moment of history.

Standing inside the newly opened GS Raj Supermarket Complex in Waimicia, Ra, he reflected on how far his community had come.

“This is a big relief for us and the surrounding villages,” said Mr Navakabisa, who travelled with his wife and neighbours in a carrier to witness the opening.

“Our fathers, grandfathers, and forefathers never experienced this. We are blessed to have this complex near us. Now we can shop locally and access foods and goods that were once only available in the city. Vinaka, Shiu Raj, for thinking of the people of Ra.”

The $6 million development complete with a branded supermarket, restaurant, and bakery was officially opened by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

Owned by businessman George Shiu Raj, the complex promises to transform daily life for Nalawa and nearby communities, reducing the need for long trips to urban centers.

The project aims to provide essential services to the local community of Nalawa and surrounding villages, serving as a one-stop shop for residents and reducing the need to travel to other towns.

The Prime Minister said he was overwhelmed by all that Mr Raj had done for Ra communities.

"We are celebrating success. We are celebrating corporations. We are celebrating great things that can come our way when we are determined to succeed.

"The Raj journey has come a long way. What we see today is the result of past efforts, from the days of his parents and his relationship with the chief. As we know, he is named after the paramount chief of Kubuna.

"Today we celebrate his dedication and loyalty to serve the Vanua o Ra."

Mr Rabuka said that as Christmas draws nearer, the new complex has brought the spirit of Christmas.

"Today we witness an event that will bring joy to the people and the next generation of young people in Ra," he said.

Mr Raj's daughter, Prita Raj, chief financial officer, said it is the family's responsibility as a business community to give back and support the people wherever possible.

She said they employ around 50 staff and may take on more later.

"We were happy to see the crowd and the support we are receiving from the Vanua. As my father has always been attached to the Vanua, we want to continue his legacy and provide for them because whatever we give comes back to us," she said.
