The growing number of people from Labasa travelling to Suva for eye care prompted Shameen Razak of Nakasi to open a new branch at Jaduram Street, Labasa.

The opening last Saturday attracted a substantial crowd, with residents eager to access professional eye‑care services locally.

Mr Razak, who has nearly 46 years of experience in optometry, said the Labasa branch was established in response to repeated requests from the community.

“Many people were travelling long distances to Suva for eye check‑ups, which prompted me to open a new branch to provide the best customer service to the people of Labasa,” Mr Razak said.

Razak Optometrist traces its origins to 1990, when Mr Razak worked for his uncle’s business, Shamsher Ali Optical Limited. In 1991, he purchased and rebranded the business as Razak Optical Limited, later adopting its current name.

Today, the company operates three branches in Fiji — Suva, Nakasi and Labasa.

The Labasa branch offers comprehensive eye‑care services, including eye examinations, vision therapy, contact lens fitting, spectacle frames and hard contact lenses. Mr Razak said it is the only clinic in Fiji offering hard contact lenses.

He added that discussions are ongoing with Labasa Hospital to assist with special eye cases.

A permanent optometrist from India will be stationed in Labasa, supported by a team of four staff members.

Mr Razak urged both adults and children to have their eyes tested regularly to maintain good eye health and detect potential issues early.
