Road upgrades in key farming and tourism areas in Cakaudrove are crucial to Savusavu’s economic prosperity, says Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries president Avikesh Pillay.
Mr Pillay said the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) needed to prioritise improvements to roads in major farming areas next year to ensure farm produce could be transported more efficiently to the Savusavu market.
He said several access roads leading to hotels were in poor condition and required urgent attention to support tourism growth and improve visitor experience.

Mr Pillay also highlighted the need to address potholes within the town and surrounding peri-urban areas, noting that deteriorating road conditions were placing an added burden on public service vehicle (PSV) operators through frequent repairs.
“A thriving town is reflected in its infrastructure. Timely road upgrades play a vital role in supporting economic activity,” he said.
The FRA continues to carry out road repairs at various locations around Vanua Levu.
Airport upgrade vital
Under the Vanua Levu Tourism Development Project (Na Vualiku), Mr Pillay said the upgrade of the Savusavu Airport was essential to attracting more tourists to the area.
He said air travel remained the most convenient option for most international visitors, and improved airport facilities would help ensure more travellers chose Savusavu, benefiting local businesses.
“We understand that Labasa Airport is also undergoing upgrade works, which is important so tourists can use either airport to access Savusavu and its tourism sites,” he said.
Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Viliame Gavoka reiterated that both Labasa and Savusavu airports were included in Phase 1 of the Na Vualiku project.
Mr Gavoka called on travellers to be patient as Government continues work to improve airport infrastructure.
Mr Pillay added that innovation in business models was key for businesses to remain sustainable in an increasingly competitive market.
He added Savusavu currently had close to 300 chamber members, reflecting strong promise in the town’s business landscape.
