Sera Naiqama is a proud Australian-born Fijian and rugby union player for Sydney University, the NSW Waratahs, and Buildcorp Wallaroos.
Powered by her love for the game and drive to build on her family’s legacy, Sera’s career has been reaching heights regardless of whether she’s got a ball or a microphone in her hand.
“I believe I occupy such a unique space of playing my sport at an international level while simultaneously forging my career in media with immense gratitude to ABC Australia and Stan Sport” Ms Naiqama.
Her introduction to Minerva stemmed from a friend’s recommendation, marking a moment of inspiration and awe of the calibre of women involved in the programme, and the opportunity to be connected with reputable mentors.
In 2022, Ms Naiqama met her current mentor, Feyi Akindoyeni, who has guided her through pivotal moments such as the Wallaroos social media post about Rugby Australia.
“Mentorship is a two-way street,” Ms Naiqama said.
When asked about the right time to think about careers and livelihood beyond sports, she encouraged all athletes to gain an early understanding of the commercial aspects of their careers.
“The time to start thinking commercially about your careers is now. Every single athlete, male or female, has an expiration date on their playing days. It’s not a matter of if but rather when,” she advised.
Ms Naiqama recommended proactive networking and seizing opportunities whilst you are visible in your sport as great ways to make connections that may be useful one day in the future.
