Businesses large and small are expected to come out in full force next weekend as a cruise liner makes its entry as the first for the Northern Division.

Next Sunday marks a special occasion for Savusavu as it hosts international guests stopping over on the Silver Shadow.

It is the first of many international cruise liners expected to call into Savusavu this year.

Owned by top-luxury travel brand, Silversea Cruises, the vessel is among a fleet owned by the Monaco-based privately-owned entity.

History

Since she entered her service in 2000m, Silver Shadow has met with its spate of incidences including a collission in 2012, and a surprise inspection that resulted in instructions to pour concentrated bleach on food to ensure it would not be salvaged. In 2020, the vessel was detained in Brazil after a passenger tested positive with coronavirus.

Savusavu

Savusavu’s Trip N Tour owner Edward Bower said the vessel would arrive from Apia, Western Samoa, and head on to Lautoka after its visit to the Northern Division.

“The passenger capacity of the ship is 388,” he said.

Savusavu Chamber of Commerce president Ravi Chhaganlal urged businesses to support the visit.

“That the ship would be coming in on Sunday; on this day most of the shops are closed,” Mr Chhaganlal said.

Mr Bower said handicraft sellers were also informed to display their artwork on the day.

Tourism Fiji

Tourism Fiji chief executive officer Brent Hill said the arrival of the Silver Shadow was “fantastic.”

“It’s great to see Savusavu benefiting, particularly since Nawi Island development was completed,” he said.

“This is exactly what we love seeing - tourists and cruises visiting parts of Fiji like beautiful Savusavu.

“It really benefits Fiji when cruises come in, and this is great to see the first for the season coming in.”
