A total of 16,000 tourism work­ers have left the country, leaving behind a labour skill gap in the tourism sector.

Minister for Tourism, Viliame Ga­voka, said this was a lot for a small country like Fiji.

Brain drain remains a serious is­sue for the tourism sector, he said.

To address the issue, Mr Gavoka believes they will need to hire retir­ees and recruit workers from other Pacific Island countries to narrow the skill gap left in the tourism sec­tor.
