A solar farm project will be built at Nadi International Airport.
Chief executive officer Mesake Nawari said a tender would be called “soon” for a 3.3-megawatt solar power system as the first phase of the project.
“We will expand progressively to 8.5-megawatts, and set up solar power projects in Nausori, and outer island airports.
“An upgrade of halogen airfield lights to LEDs (light-emitting diode), and a fully-fledged waste recycling system, are projects we are
pursuing.”
Fiji Airports is also finalising the review of Fiji State Action Plan with the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Fiji Airways, as part of its commitment to lower international operation’s carbon emissions, in line with obligations to International Civil Aviation Organisation
(ICAO).
Mr Nawari said sustainability was at the forefront of transformation of Fiji Airports, with planned investments to move towards climate change goals.
“Our targets are demanding and real,” he said.
“Every initiative, big and small, counts, and we are proud to have a bold programme of work underway.”
He said Nadi International Airport earned the accreditation level of Optimisation (Level 3) in recognition of exemplary work, to reduce
carbon emissions and engage stakeholders to do the same, as part of the global airport industry’s response to the challenges of climate change.
The Nadi International Airport consumes an average maximum of electricity of 2.5 megawatts a month to support air traffic movements
and airports’ functions.
