The Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua announced Fiji’s plans of reopening a mission at Kuala Lumpur on the margins of the nation’s 67th National Day and 61st Malaysia Day celebrations yesterday.
Ms Qereqeretabua said this was set to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance trade opportunities between Fiji and Malaysia.
“Our High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is re-opening soon,” she said.
While Ms Qereqeretabua could not reveal the timeline, she said: “Kuala Lumpur will be our main focal point, in terms of trade that will carry out after the re-opening.”
She extended her congratulations to the government and the people of Malaysia during their national day.
“You know that our relationship goes back decades beginning with the help that we offered to Malaysia through difficult times.”
Ms Qereqeretabua said she appreciated the term “Bula Maleya,” which was quoted by the High Commissioner of Malaysia during his speech also highlighted the long history of their partnership.
“In terms of us and Malaysia relationship, it is strong, it’s healthy, and we are looking to learning and gaining from the development that Malaysia has been able to achieve,” she said.
High Commissioner of Malaysia to Fiji Nor’Azam Mohd Idrus said the relationship between Malaysia’s Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka and Fiji’s own focus on unity, patriotism, sustainability, and prosperity was striking.
“The Malaysia Madani concept is a policy framework introduced by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim that emphasizes the core values of sustainability, prosperity, innovation, respect, trust, as well as care and compassion. Jiwa Merdeka translates to patriotic spirit,” he said.
Mr Idrus said ties between Fiji and Malaysia go back to the 1950s during the Malayan Emergency when 1600 Fijians showcased their remarkable bravery.
“Their exceptional service formed the rock-solid foundation that cemented the unbreakable bond between Fiji and Malaysia.”
“Being an open economy, Malaysia prides itself on doing business with the entire world including Fiji and this region.
He said it is worth noting that Malaysia consistently ranks among Fiji’s top ten trading partners and this reflects the strength and stability of our bilateral trade relations.
“Malaysia remains proud of the notable contributions made by companies with strong ties to our country, such as the Carpenters Group, Spirit of Endeavour, and Shangri-La.”
“As High Commissioner, I am pleased to offer our full backing for the ongoing growth of these firms and to welcome those on the horizon, ready to make their impact in Fiji,” he said.
