A man charged with the alleged murder of Lami-based Police Constable Peniasi Racagi has applied to have a separate drug case consolidated with his High Court matter.

Keni Salawai appeared before Magistrate Yogesh Prasad at the Suva Magistrate Court this morning, where defence lawyer Tobia Ravuniwa made the application.

Salawai faces a separate charge of unlawful possession of illicit drugs, allegedly involving 11.6 grams of marijuana.

He is also charged with the alleged murder of Constable Racagi, whose body was found in the sea near the Oceania Wesley Church in Lami on February 22.

State prosecutor Tevita Naimila objected to the application and sought time to respond to the defence submissions.

The defence maintained its request for both matters to be consolidated.

Magistrate Prasad ruled that the drug case would remain before the Magistrates Court for the time being.

The matter was adjourned to August 7.

Salawai remains on bail.
