A 49-year-old man accused of stealing a Bank of South Pacific (BSP) card from an 86-year-old man appeared in court yesterday charged with theft.

Niraj Prasad made his first appearance at the Suva Magistrates Court before Magistrate Charles Ratakele following the alleged incident in Suva on Monday.

The court heard that Prasad is a known offender with three previous convictions related to theft and absconding bail.

After waiving his right to legal representation, Prasad was given until Monday, January 12, to file a formal bail application.

Magistrate Ratakele told Prasad that, given his previous conviction for absconding bail, it would be difficult to grant him bail.

Prasad was remanded in custody at the Suva Remand Centre.
