Two people charged with possession of 42.9 grams of methamphetamine at Yue Lai Hotel last month will have their bail hearing next month.

Qing Qing Yin and Josaia Ravula, each facing one count of possession, appeared before Magistrate Sufia Hamza today.

The case was stood down three times as the court awaited Qing’s escort from the Fiji Corrections Service women’s facility.

During the proceedings, a court interpreter was present to translate the charge into Chinese for Qing.

State prosecution legal manager Eoghan Samisoni confirmed in court that he had responded to Qing’s bail application. However, the prosecution had only received Ravula’s application that morning.

Mr Samisoni requested more time to respond, and the court granted him until the end of the day to file and serve the response to the defence. He also confirmed that the prosecution would be objecting to bail.

Qing’s lawyer, Shirley Tivao, told the court they preferred a hearing with submissions to be made beforehand.

With no objections from either party, the matter was adjourned to November 5.
The pair were further remanded.
