The State has opposed bail for murder accused Peceli Rokoravolo, citing his seven previous convictions and lack of trustworthiness.

Rokoravolo, 38, is accused of the murder of Nadi-based doctor Dr Isireli Biumaitotoya.

He appeared before Justice Aruna Aluthge at the High Court in Lautoka this morning.

The court heard that Dr Biumaitotoya, fondly known as Dr 'Leighley Darling', was allegedly murdered by Rokoravolo between August 31 and September 1.

Rokoravolo is represented by Edwin Wainiqolo, while the State is represented by Joeli Naivalu.

During the bail application, Wainiqolo proposed two sureties: the accused’s elder brother and first cousin. He said they had previously acted as sureties for Rokoravolo.

Justice Aluthge raised concerns about the sureties’ financial capacity and their ability to influence the accused, given his history of reoffending.

Wainiqolo sought bail to allow his client to prepare for trial, scheduled in two months.

The State highlighted Rokoravolo’s history of reoffending and raised public interest concerns, noting the victim was a member of the LGBTQ community.

Naivalu said Rokoravolo had a domestic relationship with the late doctor, which the defence denied.

He said the court should not grant bail, citing public concern and the risk of reoffending.

The State also questioned the suitability of the proposed sureties, saying they lacked the influence and financial capacity to ensure compliance.

Wainiqolo argued that, as the victim was deceased, there was no risk of interference with witnesses, most of whom are police officers, or with his client’s testimony.

The State maintained its opposition to bail. The accused was further remanded.

The matter was adjourned to April 10 for bail hearing.
