A 38-year-old father convicted over the death of his six-year-old son will be sentenced by the High Court in Suva on June 30.
Savenaca Damuni was convicted of one count of manslaughter arising from a breach of duty after admitting responsibility for the incident that claimed his son's life in May 2023.
During sentencing submissions, Justice Dane Tuiqereqere said the court was considering the wider public interest in cases involving parental negligence and warned that Damuni should not expect a suspended sentence.

Justice Tuiqereqere said while similar cases had attracted suspended sentences in the past, the court must also consider the need to deter parents from conduct that places children at risk.
Damuni, who appeared emotional in court, sought forgiveness and expressed regret over the tragedy.
He also told the court he continued to care for his other children.
The court heard the incident occurred on May 2, 2023, while Damuni was operating a forklift.
He admitted failing to exercise proper care, resulting in his son suffering injuries that later proved fatal.
After accepting the agreed facts, Damuni pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted.
His bail was extended until sentencing.
