A Sigatoka couple who allegedly poisoned their daughter's boyfriend were released on bail yesterday after spending more than three years in prison.

Mohammed Naushad and Nazreen Nisha Khan appeared before Justice Riyaz Hamza at the High Court in Lautoka.

They are jointly charged with the murder of 18-year-old student Jeet Singh. The duo face one count of murder, while Naushad Khan faces an additional charge of criminal intimidation.

The couple are alleged to have poisoned and murdered the teenager at Waiqali Settlement, Maro, Sigatoka, on June 30, 2022. It is claimed they forced the deceased to drink a chemical at their home in Sigatoka. The late Jeet Singh was reportedly involved in a relationship with the couple’s daughter.

The two accused were represented by Iqbal Khan and Samuela Heritage, while John Rabuku appeared for the prosecution.

Mr Rabuku did not object to bail for the accused. As a result, Justice Hamza granted bail with strict conditions, including a $1000 non-cash bail.

The accused were ordered to reside with their sureties at their home in Saweni and were strictly prohibited from interfering with any State prosecution witnesses, including their daughter, until the case concludes.

The Judge placed responsibility on the sureties to ensure all bail conditions are followed.
“You have to ensure that they do not contact the State witnesses or their daughter,” Justice Hamza told the sureties.

A stop-departure order was also issued, and the accused must report to the Lautoka Police Station on the first and last Saturdays of every month.

The trial is scheduled to begin on December 11 at the High Court in Lautoka.
