Teenage pregnancy is one of the most pressing social issues facing young people in Fiji today, says Vodafone Nasinu Festival Queen contestant, Miss Tacirua East, Nanise Daveta.

The 25-year-old marketing coordinator said: “My advocacy message is teenage pregnancy. From 2018 to 2025, Fiji recorded 1127 cases.”

The festival is not just about beauty or titles, but also about giving contestants a platform to speak on issues that matter in society.

“Not only do I wish to become the Queen of the 2025 Nasinu Festival, but I also want to use my voice to stand up and advocate on teenage pregnancy,” Ms Daveta said.

She was inspired by her roots and community to work towards a better future for young people. Her maternal links connect her to the island of Moala through her mother’s village, Naroi, while her paternal ties run deep in the province of Kadavu.

“I want to remind our people that teenage pregnancy continues to affect the lives of many young girls in Fiji. Together we can change that,” she said.

“Let us rise up together, Nasinu. Let us prevent and stop teenage pregnancy here in Fiji and in our communities. Let’s work hand in hand so our young teenagers can be the future generation we all dream of.”

Festival organisers said contestants’ advocacy messages were a vital part of the week-long event. Each participant is expected to use the platform to raise awareness on an issue affecting families, youths, or the community at large.

The Nasinu Festival starts on Saturday and will end on October 11.
