Former Republic of Fiji Military Forces officer Josese Vusoniceva and Labasa businessman Ajesh Sharma will learn their fate on May 12 after the Suva Magistrate Court ruled that they have a case to answer on corruption charges.

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) charged the duo with bribery-related offences.

It is alleged that between January 1 and September 30, 2015, Vusoniceva, while serving as a Works Warrant Officer with the RFMF Engineers Unit accepted advantages totaling $9906 from Sharma, the Buildex Marketing Limited manager of sales and company secretary in exchange for performing acts in his public role.

Vusoniceva faces an alternative charge of accepting an advantage, while Sharma faces an alternative charge of bribery of a public servant by a person having dealings with a public body.

Resident Magistrate Jeremaia Savou said the prosecution had presented both direct and circumstantial evidence, which had not been discredited to the extent that no reasonable tribunal could convict.

The magistrate ruled that both accused have a case to answer. Both men chose to remain silent and did not call any witnesses.

Vusoniceva is represented by Etonia Moce, while Jasveel Singh appeared for Sharma.

FICAC lawyer Nimisha Shankar appeared for the prosecution.
