The High Court in Suva has granted bail to a man accused of setting fire to the Queen Victoria Schoo (QVS) old clubhouse along Toorak Street, Suva last June.

Nigel Singh, who is homeless and has been in remand since his arrest, appeared before Justice Dane Tuiqereqere today. He pleaded not guilty.

Singh entered his plea in the morning, with the matter stood down until the afternoon to allow him time to secure two sureties for bail.

State prosecutor Pio Navara did not object to bail but sought two sureties, citing Singh’s lack of a fixed address and the risk that he may fail to attend future court proceedings.

Singh apologised to the court and said he had attempted to contact his cousins to assist with bail but was unsuccessful.

He told the court that no family members had previously come forward to help him.

The court heard that Singh had earlier questioned why he remained in remand, saying he was homeless and posed no threat.

It was also revealed that he has a previous conviction dating back 10 years and that his immediate family members live overseas.

Taking his circumstances into account, the court granted bail under strict conditions.

Singh is required to report to the Totogo Police Station three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, attend all court proceedings, stay away from prosecution witnesses and keep clear of the QVS old clubhouse.

He was also warned to remain out of trouble while on bail.

The matter has been adjourned to February 3 for mention.
