Man convicted of murder, robbery in 2023 killing

Timoci Matanimeke has been found guilty of murdering an elderly man in 2023.

The 20-year-old was convicted on charges of murder, aggravated robbery and criminal trespassing at the High Court in Suva before Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo-Bull.

On Christmas Eve 2023, Matanimeke entered the home of 60-year-old Nitya Nand in Samabula with the intent to rob the house.

During the incident, he struck the deceased on the head, face, and cheekbone with a chopper, and stole Nand’s phone and safety boots.

Justice Fa’alogo-Bull found Matanimeke guilty of murder, aggravated robbery, and trespass.

The case has been adjourned to Thursday for the sentencing hearing.
