Man jailed for sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl
The man has been ordered to serve a minimum of one year and three months before becoming eligible for parole.

A man has been sentenced to two years and three months’ imprisonment by the High Court in Suva for the sexual assault of a five‑year‑old girl.
The offence occurred on July 23, 2024, at Kilikali Settlement in Suva.
Following a full trial, the accused was acquitted of rape but convicted of the lesser charge of sexual assault.

In sentencing, the judge described the offending as serious, noting that the victim was a very young child who knew and trusted the 29‑year‑old man, who was regarded as a cousin within a domestic relationship.
The court adopted a starting point of two years and six months’ imprisonment, which was increased by one year for aggravating factors.
This was then reduced by one year for mitigating factors, including the offender’s previous clean record and age. Time already spent in custody was also taken into account.
The man has been ordered to serve a minimum of one year and three months before becoming eligible for parole.
The sentence was not suspended, with the court noting the offender showed no remorse.
He has 30 days to lodge an appeal.
