A 34-year-old man accused of impersonating Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu to solicit money via Viber messages was remanded in custody by the Nasinu Magistrate Court today.

Hadyat Ali, of Wainibuku, Nakasi, appeared before Magistrate Vinti Prasad. He is charged with one count of identity theft under the Cybercrime Act 2021.

It is alleged that Ali posed as Mr Tudravu and used the identity to request money from members of the public through the messaging app Viber.

In court, Ali requested that he be allowed a private counsellor represent him. The presiding magistrate acknowledged the request, though no legal representation was confirmed during the hearing.

The case has been adjourned to October 9.
