Murder‑accused Charles Laxton remains under psychiatric assessment, the High Court in Suva heard today.

Laxton faces a charge of murder for allegedly killing and dismembering his grandfather. The court was told that the medical report from St Giles Psychiatric Hospital is still pending.

It is alleged that on July 12, 2025, at Navokadamu Settlement in Lutu, Laxton struck his grandfather with a cane knife, causing injuries that led to his death. Police further allege the body was dismembered and placed in a sack.

Laxton appeared before Justice Usaia Ratuvili for a case mention to review the status of his mental‑health assessment at St Giles.

The court heard that medical officials have yet to complete a full psychiatric evaluation.

State prosecutor Naazish Ali told the court that Laxton is receiving treatment and medication, but doctors require more time to properly assess his condition.

She added that the accused must be physically present at the hospital for ongoing evaluation before a formal report can be finalised.

No plea has been taken. The matter has been adjourned to March 10 to allow medical authorities time to complete the psychiatric report, which will determine whether the accused is fit to stand trial.
