Five police officers have been charged and will appear in the Suva Magistrates Court today over their alleged involvement in the assault and extortion of a Nasinu businessman.

The charges were sanctioned by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) following an investigation into the incident.

All five officers face one count each of assault causing actual bodily harm.

In addition:

  • Four of the officers have been charged with theft and wrongful confinement.
  • Two of the five face an additional charge of possession of property suspected of being proceeds of crime.

The officers are currently on interdiction.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu reaffirmed the force’s zero tolerance policy on corruption and misconduct within the ranks.

“There is a transparent process in the conduct of investigations against police officers upon the receipt of an official complaint, whereby independent legal advice is sought from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions,” Commissioner Tudravu said.

He stressed that any officer found to be involved in corrupt or criminal practices would face the full brunt of the law, as such actions erode public trust and confidence in the Police Force.
