Bua community in Vanua Levu is in shock after a local farmer, George 'Joji' Brown, was killed in an alleged stabbing at Batinivuriwai Settlement, Wainunu District, on Boxing Day.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wame Bautolu said Mr Brown was found near a roadside with a stab wound to his chest and was taken to the Wainunu Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Mr Brown, known for his humility and generosity, leaves behind a grieving family and a community struggling to comprehend the sudden loss.

His cousin, Nicholas Brown, described the tragedy as "difficult to imagine," recalling how they had spent time together the night before.

"I don't know exactly what happened since I was not there, and we are waiting for the police investigation to be completed," he said.

"He was always looking out for others and never said no to anyone who needed his help."

Villagers have speculated the incident may have stemmed from an legged theft of pounded kava, though police have not confirmed this.

It is believed that the suspect was known to the victim.

"It is the first time for us to hear of such a tragic death, and we are really saddened as it happened just after celebrating Christmas in the settlement," Nicholas added.

Sergeant Bautolu said police were continuing investigations and currently collecting statements from witnesses.
