One of the oldest residents of Nagigi, Labasa, and a sugarcane farmer, hopes the Government will address the water problems faced by 23 households in the 2026-2027 National Budget.
Jamila Bi, 67, said residents go without water during the dry season, a problem that has persisted for decades.
The community receives its water supply from a catchment in Mateniwai, Macuata, which was established as a community project in 1977.

“When there is no water, we contact the Water Authority of Fiji and request a water cart. We then have to wait in the queue, which can take many days,” Ms Bi said.
“We are not blaming the authority because many communities in Macuata face similar situations, especially during the dry season.”
Ms Bi said residents had raised the issue with several ministries, including during organised talanoa sessions.
“I hope the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport has submitted a budget to address water problems faced by communities like ours so that our living conditions can improve,” she said.
“I overheard many people saying the Government does not have money, but I hope something can be done for the sake of our children's health, for the elderly to have access to clean water, and for farmers like us to continue our farming businesses.”
The 23 households are about 15 kilometres from Labasa Town, and most residents are farmers.
