Access to clean water remains a challenge for many households, but the Fiji National University (FNU) and its students are offering a practical, cost-effective solution by designing water systems free of charge.

Dean of the College of Engineering and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Mr Salabogi Mavoa, said that through collaboration with the CEO Household programme, homes are assessed based on recent water meter readings and average usage. This data helps determine the most suitable water tank capacity and system connection to ensure consistent supply.

“We connect directly to your main system,” he said. “And if that’s not possible, one of our team members will come to inspect and find a solution.”

The initiative is also providing hands-on training for students while easing the burden on families. Although some allowances are given to student workers, the service remains far more affordable than hiring external professionals.

This innovative programme is just one example of FNU’s broader mission—to equip students with job-ready skills while supporting communities across the country.

From plumbing to power, the university’s graduates are filling roles in major industries such as the Water Authority of Fiji, Energy Fiji Limited (EFL), and telecommunications—sectors currently experiencing a national shortage of skilled workers.

There’s huge demand here and overseas, Australia alone plans to build 1.2 million new homes, and they’ll need skilled workers to do it.

For many young people who leave school due to financial hardship, this initiative offers a second chance, not just at education, but at a future with dignity and opportunity.
