A $1 million promise to upgrade sports grounds across Fiji is under scrutiny, with questions raised in Parliament about whether the funding is reaching communities most in need.
Assistant Minister for Justice Ratu Josaia Niudamu questioned Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka on Friday, seeking clarity on progress under the 2025–2026 national budget.
“Who’s really benefitting?” Mr Niudamu asked.

In response, Mr Rabuka said the Government had upgraded 17 sports grounds nationwide as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots development and support young people through sport.
He confirmed that $1 million was allocated specifically for sports development, particularly for school programmes.
“This is about investing in people, in communities, and giving our youth better opportunities,” Mr Rabuka said.
He added that more than $1.15 million had been used to deliver these projects, including operational costs and implementation through relevant ministries and councils.
“The goal is simple — to create safe spaces for sport, promote healthy lifestyles, and help young people grow into responsible citizens,” he said.
However, concerns remain over whether some communities, particularly in remote areas, are being left behind despite the upgrades.
