$300m road upgrade to transform Vanua Levu

A $300 million China-funded road upgrade for Vanua Levu is expected to break ground before the end of the year as part of the Government's nationwide infrastructure programme aimed at improving transport links across Fiji.
Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau announced the project while outlining major road, bridge and maritime developments across the country.
The programme also includes upgrades to the Natovi, Nabouwalu and Savusavu jetties, as well as feasibility studies for 22 new jetties to improve maritime connectivity.

He also officially launched the Ratu Sukuna Road Upgrading Project and the Extension Street Road Link to Brown Street Project.
The Ratu Sukuna Road upgrade will cover 2.7 kilometres of improvements, including pavement rehabilitation, drainage upgrades, new kerbs and channels, pedestrian footpaths, safer crossings, improved road signage and better traffic management.
The redesigned project has reduced costs by more than $8.3 million while maintaining internationally recognised road safety standards.
Ro Filipe said the upgraded corridor was expected to achieve at least a three-star International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) safety rating, reducing risks for commuters, students and residents.
The Extension Street Road Link to Brown Street Project will improve access around the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, ease congestion and support emergency services, patients and motorists.
Other planned works include the Critical Bridges Resilience Programme covering 11 bridges and three jetties, new bridge projects in Lami, Medrekutu, Sabeto and Lomaloma, modular steel bridges at six locations, rural road upgrades, bus shelters, footpaths, coastal resilience projects and tourism infrastructure improvements.
Ro Filipe thanked the Fiji Roads Authority, development partners, engineers, contractors and stakeholders for their support.
"These projects are more roads, they are investments in our nation's future, economic growth, public safety and the wellbeing of our communities," he said.
